Summer Assignment

Assignments due on the first day of class. IT MUST BE COMPLETED IN AN ECONOMICS NOTEBOOK hand written or in a Google Doc! You will need a NOTEBOOK you use ONLY FOR VE for Economics. This is your first assignment.

For the below assignment you may need to use your personal GMail account or your NYC Students account. Try both to access any documents below.

1. Research & Select at least 3 positions you would like to interview for in the VE company (this involves research on potential positions within the firms). Write a minimum of a 1 paragraph pitch that would CONVINCE someone that you would be GREAT for this position in the firm! You must have an electronic version of this pitch on the first day of school. This can be done in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. (REMEMBER - Other students are applying for the same positions so make yourself stand out! Research what the positions are responsible for and why you would be the perfect fit for that role in the company.)

2. Come prepared with an electronically written resume in Microsoft Word or Google Docs. Your Resumes will be finalized during the first week of school. See the link below for more information on how to write and prepare your resume.

  1. Make sure you have a Professional Summary at the top of the resume

  2. When writing your resume google and research resumes and job descriptions to try to see how to professionally phrase your job responsibilities for each job, club or activity you were involved in

  3. Bring the resume printed

  4. Bring your resume electronically on a flash drive or have it on Google Drive

 

3. Answer the following Questions in a GOOGLE DOCUMENT and save on Google Drive. Research some of content content but write at least 3-5 sentences in your own words on each question. (Do the best you can by researching on google or asking your family and friends. All of these questions will be extremely easy to discuss as we talk about economics throughout the year.)

  1. GMAIL: Create a professional gmail account if you don't have one. (cannot contain your birthday or nickname at all)

  2. TWITTER: Create a Twitter Account and write down your Twitter Handle. You will need it this year.

  3. ECON: What is Economics?

  4. OPPORTUNITY COST: What is an opportunity cost? Give two examples of an opportunity cost.

  5. SUPPLY & DEMAND: What is Supply & Demand? Give two examples of how Supply & Demand works.

  6. INTEREST RATES: What is the current Federal Funds Rate? In general, what are interest rates and how do they impact businesses/consumers? Would you borrow money from someone if the interest was high? Why/Why not?

  7. STOCK: What is a stock of a company? How much is Apple Stock worth today? How much is PayPal Stock worth?

  8. TAXES: Who do we pay taxes to? What are tax dollars used for? Do you agree with paying taxes? Why/Why not?

  9. DEBT: What is debt? Why is debt bad? What is the interest rate on your parent/friend's credit card and is that high or low?

  10. KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS: When evaluating the success of Apple as a company, what are their Key Performance Indicators ("KPIs")?

  11. IMPROVING PRODUCTS: Name 2 features that would make an Apple iPhone better than it is today. If it had those features why would that help Apple?

  12. SCENARIO: You work at a store. They are laying off workers. You can take a pay cut and save someone's job, or you get a pay raise but have to take on more responsibility and your friend loses their job. What do you decide, take the pay cut or take the raise? (Write 3-5 sentences explaining your decision.)

  13. SCENARIO: You have $500. How do you spend it? (Write 3-5 sentences explaining your decision.)

    • Save all $500 in the bank.

    • Buy 3 pairs of dress shoes.

    • Buy 3 pairs of running shoes from Nike

    • Buy 1 Belt from Louis Vuitton

    • Buy 4 shares of Apple Stock.

  14. BUSINESS 101 - BE SPECIFIC

    • List 3 things that the Finance/Accounting team does for a company.

    • List 3 things that the Marketing team do on a daily basis for a company.

    • What is the Sales Team responsible for?

    • What is the role of the management team and how often should upper management meet and why?

    • What is important about a product department for a business?

    • List 5 items the graphics team is responsible for designing for a company.
       

4. Review the Firm Corporate Documents for 2020 for the BUSINESS you are signed up for. For the assignment you may need to use your personal GMail account or your NYC Students account. Try both to access any documents

5. Only for students applying for Upper Management Positions (CEO, CFO, COO, CMO, CTO, CPO, HR Director).

  • All upper management applicants will need a 1-3 minute pitch on the following for their interviews (you'll need to look at the above documents from last year to be able to answer the questions below):

    • What plans do you have to improve the department you want to be responsible for? 

    • What is your management style?

    • Reviewing the Business Plan, Annual Report and Business Plan PowerPoint, be very specific about what your department needs to change, keep and improve upon for this year?

  • Applicants for CEO are responsible for creating a 5 minute PowerPoint presentation to be pitched to the class on the following:

    1. Your own Vision/Mission Statement for the Company 

    2. Your own new/fresh Ideas for the Company to pursue in 2021 (new product ideas, etc.)

    3. Your own direction for the Company (who to sell to - target market, and how to sell to them - marketing/advertising)

    4. Reviewing the Business Plan, Annual Report and Business Plan PowerPoint, what do you feel your department needs to change, keep and improve upon for this year?
